Program Description

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Foundation developed the Green Builds Business program to educate Hispanic entrepreneurs about sustainable environmental practices and connect them with support from industry experts as well as financial resources to transition their businesses into more environmentally conscious practices. Hispanic small business owners learn how to lower their long-term operating costs, generate strong investment returns and become leaders in the business community for the sustainability movement. The training has two big picture goals: 1) to educate local Hispanic chambers and small businesses about green money saving techniques and opportunities for funding to make necessary upgrades and 2) to train leaders on how to effectively share green best practices with other small business entrepreneurs and chambers to facilitate widespread impact in the

Hispanic business community.

USHCC Foundation staff and expert green coach Bill Roth deliver an intensive one-day, hands-on course that takes an in-depth look into building an environmentally sound business and the concomitant cost-saving benefits. For example, course topics include:

  • Understanding green and sustainability trends
  • Feasibility of integrating green practices into participants’ businesses
  • Cost and savings analyses
  • Green marketing and positioning
  • Financing green efforts
  • Integrating green and sustainability initiatives with participant business plans

The 8-hour course alternates between presentations and hands-on guidance from coaches where participants apply lessons to their specific businesses.

Participants are taught how to identify and understand what subsidies and programs they qualify for in order to implement green business practices. Both chamber leaders and small business owners create and present their Green Builds Business sustainability plan to the training audience.

All participants are given a toolkit designed by Green Builds Business Coach Bill Roth and the USHCC Foundation, to act as “green ambassadors” in their wider communities, disseminate key green education principles to other local Hispanic businesses. Local chamber leaders who participate also receive a USHCC Foundation reusable bag of energy efficient supplies including surge protectors, LED light bulbs and lithium batteries to jumpstart the green transformation of their home offices and give them immediate cost saving measures to track.
